In Greek and Roman mythology, Charon is the gloomy, old ferryman who takes the dead in a boat across the Dead River - usually the Acheron, the rivers Lethe and Styx are also often mentioned - for a fee (coin), so that they are brought into the empire of Hades, the ruler of the underworld. The places of worship dedicated to the ferryman, mostly located in caves or rock openings, are known as Charoneia.
