A crisp mid-winter morning walking up the dark side of the Pouakai Range with Mount Taranaki looming large in the background.
I could feel the warmth of the sun on my back but the path was covered in ice, making for a treacherous return home. Treacherous, as in taking an embarrassing fall or slipping off the side of a cliff, never to be seen again.
By the end of the walk there were no injuries, just a smashed Huawei mobile phone after it broke the fall of one of my hiking accomplices. It was a humorous moment that was short-lived, for it was my phone in the pack, not his.
