About eleven thousand people make up the Mursi tribe of South-Western Ethiopia. With a culture rich in colour and vibrancy, the Mursi people are often characterised in pop culture by their lip plates, jewellery, and body decorations - notably depicted in Marvels’ Black Panther movie, for instance.
Less popular, however, are the challenges the tribe face in the wake of a rapidly developing and globalised world. In part due to the challenges they face, as a result of ongoing ecological and developmental mandates, the culture and way of life are now facing extinction.
In this series, I am diving into Mursi culture, traditions and some of the figures of their societies. With this series, I hope to, in some way, capture and immortalise the vibrancy and uniqueness of their rich culture and play my part in bringing awareness to their challenges and de-exoticize the view commonly held about them.
