De·re·al·i·za·tion /dēˌrē(ə)ləˈzāSHən/ is a mental state where you feel detached from your surroundings, and people and objects around you seem unreal. Even so, you’re aware that this altered state isn’t normal. The disorder is usually triggered by severe stress, particularly emotional abuse or neglect during childhood, or other major stresses (such as experiencing or witnessing physical abuse).
