In ancient Egyptian beliefs, the soul (Ba) is the most important of all, the living worked all their lives to purify their souls, sticking by the Ma’at. Going through all of the trouble of immortalizing the body of the dead was only to preserve a vessel for the soul to come back to after its journey in the underworld. All of the scripts on the walls of tombs are meant to guide the soul through this journey, prepare it for its dangers and guide it back to the body. It was their greatest fear that their souls would be lost forever, not being able to return back to the body because it became damaged, stolen or unrecognizable.
At the Deepest point of king Ramesses VI tomb, I stand in awe at the very top of his sarcophagus imagining what would it be like to be a soul just coming out of this body, venturing into the underworld guided by the gods in journey meant to identify the purest of souls.
