In July 2020, Comet NEOWISE (C/2020 F3), which approaches the Earth once every 6700 years, made its closest approach. Although the comet was observable for a long period of time, there was hardly any clear weather in Japan that year, making photography extremely difficult. I flew to Ishigaki Island in Okinawa Prefecture, where the weather was good for a few days, to capture the moment.
It will be 6,700 years before we can see this combination of a beautifully trailing comet and mangroves standing on the sea, as if waiting for it on the ground.
