A moment spent alone, and grateful.
This was my first solo backpacking trip to a place I'd never been. I arrived late afternoon and set up camp in the fog. Visibility was poor, and I realized that sunset probably wasn't in the cards for me. Oh well. Turns out the weather is hard to predict in the mountains. I started making dinner, a little resigned, but happy to be outside and proud of myself for getting there alone. About ten minutes later, though, the clouds around me started sinking. Down they went, beneath the ridge I stood on. I looked up from my bowl of camp macaroni in disbelief. I was floating on an ocean of pink, staring off at distant mountain islands in the sky. A stroke of (extremely) good luck.
Needless to say, I dropped my food, grabbed my camera and proceeded to run around like a crazy person for about twenty minutes as the light faded. When all was said and done, my dinner was cold, but hey, I wasn't complaining...
