The Hilum. A point of entry or exit. Our kidney, responsible for the filtration of our blood, has two primary functions. Release the bad, and return the good. It senses what is needed and lets it in or detects what is bad and flushes it out. The flow is never-ending and perfectly balanced. While shivering in the frozen water, near the point of hypothermia, I stared in wonder upon the icy ladder, preventing entry into the glowing upper portion of this canyon. Water could flow down, but nothing could return. There are times the bad needs to be let out. Often there is very little good that can be let in. Soon summer will come, the ice will melt, and passage upstream will be available again. However, for a time, the water was in control. Blood goes in with imperfections, toxins, and imbalances but returns clean and perfected. Water in this canyon flows through, smoothing imperfections and clearing debris. Once ready, the ice melts and the ladder allows us entry to enjoy its beauty.
