From Prime Minister to President

Dr. Kamuzu Banda (left) governed Tanganyika as Prime Minister from 1961 to 1962 and then as President from 1963 to 1964, after which he led its successor state, Tanzania.

Mzee Jomo Kenyatta (center), was the first prime minister (1963–64) and then the first president (1964–78) of independent Kenya.

Hastings Kamuzu Banda (right) was the Prime Minister and later President of Malawi from 1964 to 1994 In 1966, the country became a republic and he became president.
