One of the very first things you will hear about Iceland is how harsh the weather can be. Hearing it and living it are two very different realities.
Somewhere in the middle of what seems like an endless black sand beach, you will find the wreckage of an old US Navy Douglas C-117D. En route from the radar station at Stokksnes, located on the south-eastern coast of Iceland to Keflavik, the cargo flight experienced severe icing. In the fierce storm that raged on the south coast of Iceland, the pilot had to make an emergency landing. Other theories suggest human error, fuel shortage, or mechanical failure. The crew of 7 survived the crash and were all rescued by helicopter.
