A potential hotbed for microbial life, Enceladus is the icy jewel of Saturn’s satellites & the most reflective surface in our solar system. Its frozen reflective shell is 25 miles thick & encapsulates a global subsurface ocean 6 miles deep. An occasional geyser-like plume rockets ice crystals through the surface at about 800 mph (a phenomenon I’d like to explore in more detail with another painting).
Recreating the surface to this 8th installment of the Celestial Series proved to be a challenge, but with extensive layering, this mostly white moon became surprisingly interesting. I attempted to recreate the geologic stress of its dynamic, constantly cracking surface by overwatering the paint layers & leaving the piece outside overnight in freezing temperatures.
