This panting was inspired by the exploration of movement. I wanted to see how liquid materials would interact with the human anatomy. For this experiment I used black treacle and I was in awe at how the treacle transformed my model's face into something more striking and sinister than I would have imagined. When I began to paint my image in watercolour, I created it on a giant canvas as I wanted the portrait to amplify the striking fluidity of the treacle. This painting oozes a sinister regality which has filled the galleries it has featured in. This piece means a great deal to me as it was my first hyperrealistic painting where I discovered my style.
I am dedicating this piece to my late father. This was his favourite of all my collections.
