“He taught me better than school did!”

Original watercolor sketch for the Café set in ’My Own Private Idaho.’ In the film, Mike and Scott and all the street kids hang out repeatedly in this joint, which was an adapted location in downtown Portland. Gus had the cast – which included some kids actually from the Portland streets -- speak extemporaneously about their lives. The title here is from the dialogue in one of the scenes. As production designer, I did this sketch to show modifications needed for the shooting and décor. The music cue is a Bill Stafford pedal steel track recorded for the film.
