Jingū Kōgō (~169 - 269 CE) is a semi-legendary figure in Japanese history and myth, and perhaps the first known onna-bugeisha. Her husband, Emperor Chūai, had planned a military offensive against the Kumaso rebels.
Jingū is said to have been a powerful shaman with a deep connection to the gods. She was visited in a dream by a deity who told her to stop worrying about the rebels and focus on the riches of the kingdom of Silla.
When Jingū explained her vision to Chūai, he did not believe her and continued with his plans. His campaign was unsuccessful and his army sustained heavy losses. Chūai died shortly thereafter.
Jingū took up the throne and conquered Silla's kingdom, supposedly without shedding a single drop of blood. After 3 years, she returned to Japan as a renowned war hero.
Empress Jingū’s reign lasted for nearly 70 years until her death in 269 CE at the age of one hundred. She was succeeded by her son, the Emperor Ōjin.
