Highly self-aware and sometimes literally reflective, Davey Leavitt’s work is unmissable. The L.A.-based artist and designer channels his internal reckonings, emotional vulnerabilities, and keen observations on our cultural conditioning into a menagerie of irresistible artistic expression that begs for interaction. Splashy smiley faces, neon squiggles, playful imagery, and Magritte-like statements (“This is a painting of paradise”) portray a kind of happiness that can only be achieved via struggle. All to say that wherever and however you encounter his work, spend a little time going beyond your instant sense of delight. There’s lots more substance beneath the surface.
