The first of a series of artworks
In the 1930s Mayol Aristide created a series of works dedicated to nature. The 3 sculptures symbolized the 3 elements "The Mountain" - earth, "The River" - water, and "Air" - air.
The "Mountain" sculpture is a woman, she is the soul of the mountain. One leg of the woman goes into the stone, the other is bent; her head is bowed. The woman's fingers are open and pointing upward - this is the top of the mountain. The wavy fluttering hair represents the clouds creeping up to the summit.
