A whirlwind of a chase day this was. I drove out to Amarillo, Texas a few days after school ended for a risky chase day. A level 2/5 risk in a small area made the forecast easier, but as usual, I had no idea what to expect. After baking in the sun all day, an explosive updraft popped up over the Palo Duro Canyon that eventually fizzled. A slow moving supercell that traversed near closed roads quickly proved to be the storm of the day. After a quick reposition further to the northwest, this rotating beast kept trying to drop tornadoes. For hours it was tornado warned, but a small lacking of low level ingredients hampered its ability to drop one. Thankfully it did not due to its close proximity to a city. Even though no tornadoes dropped, this beast was one of the most incredible storms I have ever witnessed. This is an example of why I chase!
