Ordo: 6KordoFlr54_0043SQ
Created in 2017, Ordo comprises 276 works from a long-form generative work. Drawn directly from files on his personal computer, the series brings together six decades of experimentation with line, form, colour and space.
In Ordo, Csuri used his proprietary Ribbon tool to generate brushstroke-like forms, ribbons and strings that weave through transparent, three-dimensional shapes. His Color Mix tool introduced variations in colour according to the ribbons’ relationships in space. These processes extended his longstanding interest in painting, including his study of Paul Cézanne’s use of colour, into a medium shaped by code and light.
The resulting works have a painterly quality, with layered lines, gradations of colour and shadows creating a sense of depth and movement. Csuri’s interest in chiaroscuro - the interplay of light and dark - appears in the way the ribbons cast shadows within these constructed spaces.
Underlying these visual effects is Csuri’s lifelong exploration of control and chance. He established the parameters, responded to unexpected results and selected the final works, preserving the “element of surprise” central to his practice. Each work emerged through this exchange between the generative process and his decisions as an artist.
A pioneer of computer art and animation, Csuri began working with computers in the 1960s. His practice spanned plotter drawings, prints, sculpture, holograms and animation, while his research as an artist and professor contributed to the development of tools for computer graphics and animation. Ordo continues this sustained investigation into the possibilities of the computer as an artistic medium.
