Gradual is a word for a process that has already decided its ending. The faces did not negotiate the blend — they arrived at it the way conclusions arrive, through the accumulation of small surrenders none of which felt, at the time, like surrender. What remains when the blending completes is not a composite. It is whatever was always underneath the distinction, waiting for the faces to finish with each other.
