Loveloss II

Marsone's most celebrated painting, Loveloss II holds a myriad of meanings and often raises more questions than answers for the viewer. The woman's gentle embrace- is she holding fast or about to let go? Her gaze seems set in the mid distance suggesting her mind may be elsewhere. The figure on the left was fully painted before the gestural paintwork was added, using a palette knife to apply the thick layers of paint. Similarly, one can ponder their existence. Are they real or imagined? A memory perhaps, or soon to be a memory. This painting is part of a significant body of work by Marsone exploring intimate relationships, their depth, their difficulties and the ability to stay connected to a significant other during challenging times.
