Cordyceps is a parasitic fungus that attacks the bodies of insects and other arthropods. The first time I witnessed creatures that had been overcome by the cordyceps fungus, I was mesmerised. These chilling and strangely beautiful scenes were like something out of science fiction - bodies of insects and spiders frozen in time, each with a different kind of colourful fungus emerging from them.
There was something poetic in these beautiful deaths. Something akin to the solemnity and stillness of a funeral but with a joyous explosion of life too. Like funeral effigies decorated with flowers, or the supernova that comes after the death of a star.
Everything is eventually reclaimed, these bodies that we borrow for a short time will be consumed and folded back into the soil.
