"That people - to - people relationship is what's really important" President Barack Obama 2016
President Barack Obama in the Oval office of the White House in Washington January 2016, before his last State of the Union address. On the same day, President Barack Obama urged Pakistan to avoid developments in it's weapons programs that could increase risks and instability.
This is an image from my Celebrate Hope the Obama collection. I have enjoyed animating and working with my other art pieces to bring a new evolutionary vibrancy but I also wanted to set a marker. At the end of the day - some of these images are part of a live gallery exhibit -solo show - of black and white and color photographs that is touring and started on Black History Month 2019.
I grew up old school, shooting black and white and printing by hand in a dark room. I was first published as a photographer in magazines at the age of 19 and had my own studio that I earned and paid for by myself . I was rare, I was woman in a field totally dominated by men at the time, but I was blessed with "the eye"
Fast forward and I worked years in the mainstream film industry in America ,as I wanted to work with moving images. I have worked on films all over the world. In Washington DC I was compelled to pick up my still camera for the Obama's for the first time in years.
My mother had passed away and when she did I bought a camera again, knowing deep inside I was going to need it. I was going to show the beauty in the world. I was right.
In my live show walk throughs I explain my artistic journey and it's motivations and the motivations for photographing the Obama's and for the show Celebrate Hope.
I was deeply compelled by the racism I witnessed towards the Obama's when I was at the White House and I felt and thought if I could just nudge that narrative a bit through my work..I could make a positive impact on that narrative. I understand I did.
The best we can do on this earth is make the world better. That has been a conscious my motivating factor for me since a child.
I hope you enjoy this Collection. These are legacy pieces and it is a meant a lot bringing them to you. Sometimes the highest mountains we climb are those of the our personal spirit . My journey has been no exceptions- and of course neither is the Obama's
Love and blessings
