The Shakuhachi is a remarkably expressive instrument in the hands of a true master. I am too often entranced by a performance both calm and agitated, silence followed by action. This particular performance perfectly demonstrates my favorite aspect of the art, which is why I decided to represent it.
I chose a material that is as expressive as I can handle, compressed charcoal, and attempted to instinctively act, and abstain from acting in a brusk manner, as I was portraying his playing. There is also a fluidity with this material that lends itself well to how the music sounds.
