The embankments protect the new landscape from the most impactful dynamics of the metropolitan city; they offer an unexpected refuge for the growth of biological diversity, which has no place elsewhere. They make it a residual space for experimenting with ecological change, a place of change, a frontier land, a region of hybridization of different species. However, this protected space also has to deal not only with the comfortable cycle of tides, mists and seasons, but also with the unpredictable time of furious floods, with that of breakage, sudden runoff, drastic change, erosion, crushing. This photograph belongs to a project I made during the last winter along the banks of the Piave River, in the northeast of Italy, near Venice.
