Alaska has an estimated 30,000 wild grizzly bears statewide. Also known as “brown bears”, these bears are larger than black bears and have a prominent shoulder hump. They rarely attack humans, but will attack if they are surprised or feel defensive. They will eat berries, roots, and salmon when available. As bears get ready for hibernation, they will bulk up and eat double the amount of food they normally need!
