Mot is a death god from Canaanite mythology, residing in the underworld and in "cyclical" battle with another ancient god Baal, the "false idol" mentioned in the Hebrew Bible (see 1 Kings 18). In relation to Prophet Elijah’s story, Canaanites believed that Mot won over Baal, bringing death and drought to the land. The land of Canaan had no nearby rivers. Therefore, in order to bring life and rain back, they perform rituals to put their faith and call upon Baal to break Mot’s curse, until Elijah intervened and introduced his God.
