This is a unique way to use Art as a way to support Ukraine in this time of crisis. Following my concept of Portraits on Carpet, this one is a tribute to the roots of beautiful Ukrainian Culture. Featuring traditional embroidery with a portrait of a woman proudly wearing the Vinok.
The Vinok: Traditional Ukrainian crown flower which is the symbol of wisdom, courage and strength, is historically worn by young, unmarried women to signify that they were « pure ».
Instead of a Persian carpet, I experiment with traditional Ukrainian embroidery called Vyshyvanka : The ornamentation si a coded pattern that serves as a charm that can protect you, gives luck and prosperity. Conventionally divided into 3 groups: Floral: reflect the purity and prosperity of the family. They mean constant renewal and infinity. Geometric: like star, triangle, cross have pagan roots and symbols intertwined with Slavic mythology. Zoomorphic: Animals, birds, angels, have various significance as ritual symbols and charms.
