Ascension is a digital artwork that explores the relationship between materiality and digital image-making through surfaces that evoke the appearance of ancient relics and weathered concrete. Constructed entirely from digitally generated textures and several recycled sketches, this eighth iteration of the work questions the distance between physical and virtual forms of visual energy, asking how closely digital processes can communicate the tactile presence of material culture. By grounding synthetic textures in references to archaeology and permanence, Ascension proposes a form of digital materiality with its own intrinsic visual language, its own digital DNA.
