Head on view of a robust midwater Amphipod, Hyperia, that has migrated to the surface at dusk. It has four eyes, one pair of holoptic compound eyes that cover sideways and mainly above the owner. The other pair, shaped like spear points, presumably specialist compound eyes that seem to have a much more limited field of view. We imagine these are for closer appreciation of its immediate surroundings, or possibly its food or even its mate when it comes to reproduction. Relatives of this amphipod often burrow into the bell of Jellyfish and take up, what might be called, 'harmless residence'.
