Physalia, the Portuguese man-o-war, trails its deadly tentacles many, many tens of metres into the ocean's surface waters, in anticipation of snagging and paralysing shoaling fish of many different species. What few people appreciate, is that this species only frequents the Atlantic Ocean. A different and smaller species is found in the Pacific. We believe we are the first to document a modest infiltration of the Pacific species into the waters around our research laboratory and film studio in Bermuda. The predominant feature of Physalia, when first seen, is the eight inch long, (200 millimetre), gas-filled float, which has its own erectable sail, that can be deflated if conditions induce it to 'batten-down'.
