One should not forget that plankton occurs in both salt and fresh waters. One of the most familiar forms of freshwater plankton is the single-celled ciliate, paramecium, which, for us, became a pivotal photographic subject that set a major part of our commercial activity down a science fiction path of filming for many major feature film productions. Here, a single paramecium is surrounded by stained yeast cells, some of which it has engulfed and begun to digest. The dye we used changes colour when conditions around it change from acid to alkali, and that is exactly what happens within the paramecium as it digests the yeast cells.
