Jack-sail-by-the-wind or Velella. This close cousin to Porpita behaves very like it, except that instead of floating upside down beneath the surface film, this animal sits, right way up, on top of the surface film. It has a diagonal sail that is said to be set at the mirror image opposite slant in animals from south of the equator to those found north of the equator, where the Atlantic gyres rotate in opposite directions. Velella harbours a large number of symbiotic algae within its blue peripheral mantle. It is really a sort of micro-greenhouse.
