Porpita meets its match, as a Sea Slug, Glaucus, closes in on its tentacles, munching away until it gets to the disc and mantle which it will also partly devour, leaving only the plastic-like husk of the disc to drift across the ocean until it makes landfall, or waterlogged, sinks as marine snow to the depths. Another remarkable fact about this Sea Slug, is that it is both male and female, therefore a hermaphrodite having both male and female sex organs. Our more recent research has shown a never before described detail of defence behaviour exhibited by Porpita. We can confirm that this blue Chondrophoran sheds a film of mucus onto the sea's surface and that this film effectively prevents the Sea Slug getting close enough to grab hold of the Porpita with either mouth or the finger-like cerata with which the slug is equipped.since before the dinosaurs.
