Perhaps the most beautiful and enigmatic creature in all the oceans of the world! This beautiful blue Sea slug, only 5 centimetres across when fully grown, floats in the open ocean's surface film and does so upside down, mouth facing up, black foot facing up, gonopore, or birth aperture, facing up! This is Glaucus. It is completely blind. It is completely unable to propel itself around. It drifts. It drifts wherever the currents and winds and storms take it. It cannot actively hunt its prey, or even search for it. It is completely at the mercy of the weather and the water. Yet, it survives. Very few scientists even get to find this animal, yet it plies the tropical, sub-tropical and even temperate oceans of the world and has done so successfully since before the dinosaurs.
