This is a Comb Jelly, by the name of Beroe. This science fiction character is really nothing more than a stomach attached to a mouth, and a very large one at that. This comb jelly is also a voracious predator as well as being cannibalistic towards other comb jellies upon which it avidly feeds by swallowing them whole, sometimes larger than themselves. Comb jellies are propelled by eight rows of beating comb plates, multiple fused flaps of sturdy cilia that beautifully refract multi spectral waves of colour in cascading rows. The larger species of comb jellies closely related to this species are sometimes as big as slices of bread. We have filmed many of these predacious Beroe in Bermuda that display beautiful yellow and pink colouring.
