Keiki Pool is a spot on Oahu's North Shore, a short hike from the Turtle Bay Resort toward Kahuku Point that has long been a special place for locals to bring their keiki (children) to introduce them to the ocean.
It is also a prime birth beach for our endangered Hawaiian monk seals, and I have watched many mother and pup pairs at this spot.
This image is a rare, peaceful moment here when I wandered by and found I had the pool to myself.
These moments will become even more rare as a multi-dwelling development is being built about a hundred yards behind where I took this photo. This pristine location will be forever changed, and we've already seen wildlife behavior impacted, with mothers that used to pup in this spot now moving out to more remote locations away from the noise and activity.
