vissyarts: The pendulum of the mind

The pendulum of the mind alternates between sense and nonsense, not between right and wrong - Carl Jung

The phrase "alternates between sense and nonsense" highlights the variability of human thought. At times, our thoughts and perceptions may align with reason, logic, and rationality—what Jung refers to as "sense." During these moments, our understanding of the world feels clear, coherent, and grounded in reality.

However, there are also moments when our thoughts veer into the realm of "nonsense." Here, our thinking may become irrational, illogical, or disconnected from reality. These are the times when our minds entertain whimsical ideas, fantastical notions, or unfounded beliefs.

Jung's assertion that the pendulum swings between sense and nonsense, rather than between right and wrong, suggests that the dichotomy of right and wrong is not always the primary driving force behind our thoughts. Instead, our mental fluctuations are more concerned with the balance between coherence and confusion, reason and irrationality, clarity and ambiguity.

This perspective invites us to consider the complexity of human cognition and the nuanced interplay between different modes of thinking. It reminds us that our thoughts are not always neatly categorized as right or wrong but are shaped by a myriad of influences, including our emotions, experiences, and subconscious desires. Ultimately, Jung encourages us to explore the rich tapestry of our own minds, embracing both the rational and the irrational aspects of our thought processes.
