correspondence pairs chaotic, kaleidoscopic animations with music they respond to. Each edition brings a new perspective on one of the tracks, changing its tempo, key, and voice. Created over the course of two years and many back-and-forth emails with musical collaborator Snack Master, this work has grown organically to have a sort of "lived-in" quality that you can feel. Music was recorded from a physical keyboard in MIDI format, then translated into data and analyzed for emotionally impactful transitions used as triggers for animation changes.
A small assortment of "visual modes" determine the animation for each output: an equalizer, moving shapes in a field of cellular automata, Voronoi diagrams, mycelial growth, or overlapping ripples. Each of these comes in many variations to create a unique emergent appearance.
Interactive web and MIDI controls included with the work allow for detailed exploration of the algorithm and its possibilities. Dial in your favorite sound and appearance, and save it with PostParams so everyone else can enjoy it, too. Or, set a timer for transitioning to new random outputs, or enable the Drift feature to gradually walk the parameter space -- creating an endless audiovisual experience that is never twice the same.
Snack Master's companion album Correspondence, containing the music that was used to create correspondence, is available on bandcamp,

correspondence is aspect ratio- and scale-agnostic -- but will automatically fit itself to containers between 16:9 and 9:16. Press A to toggle between fit and 1:1 (square) aspect ratio. Square aspect ratio is most appealing with odd-numbered or high symmetries (e.g. 3, or 16).
Drift mode is great if you'd like some gradual change and novelty in a long-running animation. Enable Drift, adjust the associated timer for frequency of changes, and uncheck any features you don't want to drift. Note: you may see feature combinations that don't appear by default.
The random seed timer is nice for occasional, more dramatic changes. It hews closer to default feature combinations.
Drift/Random Seed are not compatible with saved changes in PostParams. Only changes made by hand may be saved.
Features are deterministic for hashes, but the animation is non-deterministic. You may notice differences from one viewing to the next (personally, I think this is part of the fun).
