Meet Tarjei, one of the 13 sons of Grýla and Leppalúði. This time of year, Grýla is the most feared creature of the North, as around Christmas time, she leaves her cave in the Dimmuborgir lava fields, to search towns and villages for food. Her favorite dish is a stew of naughty children, for which she has an insatiable appetite. Her 13 sons, known to Northerners as "the Yule Lads", set out at the end of December to support their mother in gathering prey.

Tarjei, the youngest son, has always been the odd one out. Unlike his brothers, he is a gentle, more humane creature with a good heart. For instance in fall, when his brothers set out to harass and steal from unsuspecting humans, Tarjei hides deep in the woods and helps animals stockpile food to prepare for winter. So each year, come Christmas, as his brothers are plundering and pillaging villages, filling their big sacks with as many screaming children as they can get their hands on, Tarjei finds his way to the same little cottage he's been visiting every year for centuries, in a valley just outside Skjeberg, Norway. Since a few years, little Theodor and his mom inhabit the house.

Last year, Tarjei spent hours lying the cold ground, peeking through the fogged up windows watching them play board games, have dinner and read books together by the fire. This year, exactly twelve moons later, it was as if Theodor had been expecting him to visit again...
