part of 'Greenwise' or 'cybernature' series, an image I made in 2007 as a reminder or idea that all social media and web technology is really a way to break down Space and Time. Technology attempts to keep people connected and moving towards this shared form of control over our environment and over constant change, via instant communication and information exchange. But can social media really 'arrive' or mature, until better virtual 'presence' - via VR/AR/MR technology etc. - arrives? Until there is more responsibility or direct ownership of words spoken into Twitter-spheres, or better evolution of shared spaces for discussion and debate? Platforms will come and go (and burn) and they are seeking to move us towards a higher form of 'connectivity' than ever before. But are they also complicating our lives and influencing them in return, reducing self-discovery and personal growth? We are still a species of ape in the smoke around a campfire, drawn to the warmth conjured by our technology. Indeed, these big (or emerging) platforms may evolve us towards a better individual/group collective togetherness - through vivid, shared online spaces - but they will need to get better first. They will need to be 3D like the world we were born to, and they will need to be secure and safe. We perhaps shouldn't waste so much time on platforms which don't bring value to our lives. Here in 2020 they're still far from perfect. Besides, there will always be something to be said for Space and (Face)Time. Here at the dawn of digital value and web3, we still need to look to the Source, and to the past, towards a more 'permanent culture' and at the infancy of all this technology. Is it still moving us together culturally, globally, or becoming more diversified and tribal, moving us apart? Will a full-blown 'Matrix' cyberspace arrive one day, with its own global, online language (or translation technology), separate from the physical countries and their languages and cultures, (which will always exist)? We do still need one.
