At the beginning of 2020 I was briefly involved in helping to promote a new app called display.land by Ubiquity6. They were looking for artists to create artworks showing off their photogrammetry tool which enabled the user to make 3d scans of physical objects and convert them into digital 3d models, using only a smartphone. To share the love for this brilliant app (which sadly is no longer available) I created two artworks. "Winter Dreams" was the first of these.
As an XR artist I am part of an amazing creative community of virtual reality artists called "VRArtLive" and this year I have been taking part in their "Year of VR Art" challenge, creating a piece of artwork using VR tools every week in 2020. When the opportunity arrived to do something with display.land, the weekly theme of the challenge was "Winter Dreams" so I decided to combine the two tasks using display.land for photogrammetry, Gravity Sketch for modeling in VR and Blender for the final video render.
For the past few years I have been struggling to recall my dreams, likely the result of too many nightshifts and poor sleeping habits over the years. Nowadays I only get the smallest glimpse as images of the dreamworld slip away immediately upon waking. Growing up, I used to pour through books on dream analysis and Jungian achetypes, trying to find meaning in the symbols. My dreams fascinated me and I looked forward to going to sleep at night wondering where I would be taken next and what would be revealed to me. To have that doorway into the subconscious go missing is something that feels like a huge loss. I hope one day I will regain access. "Winter Dreams" is my attempt to communicate this feeling of loss as the astral journeys are shed by the waking mind.
