When Our Ancestors Dance

When Our Ancestors Dance

In Yoruba Land it is believed that ancestors never die rather they transcend into another plane of life, where they watch over their offsprings and relay the messages of the gods by occasionally coming back as masquerades. Masquerade are known to come out during festivals, the process of donning of masquerade is out of the public’s eye as it is a sacred ritual that only few spiritual leaders have access to. Their attire is always colourful and vibrant breathing life into air…. Oozing spirituality into the world. Their voice always clumsy chanting prayers for the ones alive, giving warning of impending events. Their seldom visit although solemn, is characterised by dancing and drumming. Their dance steps seemingly practiced yet spontaneous tells a tale of ancient spirituality.
