When I Dream, animating 360° augmented reality 3D object, 2012/2025. Edition 1/1 + 1 AP
Who am I when I dream? How many different lives do I live in my sleep? Where do those lives go when I wake? Where do those selves go when I wake?
We cannot watch ourselves sleep, nor can we recover all the experiences we have every night, yet they form an integral part of our unconscious selves. This work expresses the multiple existences and journeys we all experience every night, but so seldom remember. This part of our life remain a mystery, even to ourselves.
"When I Dream" is a 360° matrix of my own face, abstracted with white Japanese make-up, eyes fluttering in REM sleep.
I originally created it on the now extinct Layar AR app in 2012. It premiered in the exhibit "Fragmented Identity" held by The Art Syn Projects (London) at art:gwangju:12, in Gwangju, Korea. It is one of the my earliest AR artworks and the first AR art that I ever exhibited at an art fair. In 2025 it has been rebuilt on objkt.com as a native animated 3D AR NFT.
