My heart, along with this rose, weeps for the people of Afghanistan, particularly the women and girls thrust into the medieval darkness of totalitarian dictatorship and gender apartheid. As an adolescent I first read, in a novel of 19th century romance, the term, Hindu Kush. The phrase washed over me like a strong perfume and my imagination was fired. Afghanistan became a kind of Eden - a lush and exotic garden inhabited by beautiful and heroic people - for beyond my reach but enriching my world. Would that I could today enrich the real world of my unknown, but beloved sisters there. I weep, and pray that Afghanistan may see a new dawn.
