In the 1950s and 60s, the Salton Sea was a flourishing oasis in the middle of the California desert, a hotspot for tourists and locals.
By the 70s, the area was abandoned as the lake became toxic. Chemical shifts in the water made it unsafe to swim in and caused mass die-offs in the fish and bird populations.
The area is now a virtual ghost town, and instead of sand, the beaches are made of pulverized fish bones.
