The night air was cool, and the streets of the city were quiet as he walked home from his night shift. He had been an office manager for a large company for several years, and it had been a long day. After clocking out at midnight, he decided to take a walk instead of catching the bus.
He enjoyed being outside in the stillness of the late evening, when all the other workers were off the streets and home in their beds. The street lamps glowed against the masonry of nearby buildings, casting a warm yellow light across the sidewalk.
Though it was late, he didn't feel tired; instead he felt energised by his leisurely stroll through town after such a strenuous day. As he passed a church with its doors open for late-night prayer meetings, a gentle hymn drifted towards him on the breeze. The sweet sound reminded him of Sunday mornings as a child and filled him with peace.
He rounded another corner and came face-to-face with an old pub that had become something like a landmark to him over the years; it was where he'd stop off on his way home from work on Friday nights after pay day. Despite its rather rundown exterior, it had always held an almost nostalgic charm for him even though he'd never stepped foot inside its doors in all his years living here.
As he rounded one final corner, he saw his own apartment building at last; it was barely illuminated by the flickering street lamp opposite but it still seemed oddly comforting somehow. He took one final look around before making his way up to his floor and unlocking his door - it had been quite some time since he'd taken this route home but it was strangely familiar too, as if nothing much had changed over all these years apart from himself growing older and wiser with every passing minute.
