In a little over a decade he produced some 2,100 paintings and drawings, including 860 oil paintings, most of which were done in the last two years of his life. These include landscapes, still lifes, portraits and self-portraits, and are distinguished by bold colors and vibrant, impulsive and expressive brushstrokes, considered the foundations of modern art. At the age of 37, after years of psychological illness and poverty, he tragically passed away a few days after being wounded by a gun due to suicide according to some and murder according to others.
