वात vata air, wind — qualities of cold, dry, light, movement पित्त pitta fire — qualities of heat, moisture, digestion, energy कफ kapha water and earth — qualities of coldness, softness, slowness, nourishment, lubrication, calm
In the 5,000 year old practice of Ayurvedic medicine, balance is achieved by harmonizing the three doshas: vata, pitta and kapha. The three doshas are represented in every human, but in different proportions. Each dosha is a two-way scale: when a scale is out of balance, it causes physical and/or psycho-emotional distress. The approach is to identify one's natural levels and to keep the doshas within that natural range, a bit like going back to factory settings!
