Since COP21 in Paris in 2015, a goal of keeping to well below 2 degrees celsius increase has been agreed to, with a commitment to attempt to keep to 1.5 degrees celsius. The Small Island States group pushed for 1.5 degrees celsius as a firm committment, on the basis that higher rises would threaten the existence of many islands. This was rejected, in favour of the 2 degree figure. With COP27 now in session, less wealthy and less carbon-intense countries who are already suffering the largest climate impacts are pushing for 'loss and damage' provisions from developed countries. COP27, sponsored by plastic-polluting coca cola, will debate implementation of previous climate agreements to keep global temperature rise below 2 degrees celsius, meanwhile CO2 outputs continue to rise. Various UN reports show that almost all countries are not even coming close to stated goals and consequently there is a rise in direct action protests as it becomes obvious that most corporates want business as usual and will pressure politicians and governments and continue lying to the public. The following link is a piece I wrote supporting such protests.
