Underworld

This was captured at Lago di Braies in the Dolomites on an expedition in 2018. I had never experienced such perfectly calm conditions, following an almighty storm in the night. The last breath of wind died and the ripples disappeared. The turquoise water turned to glass, reflecting the sun kissed mountains in the distance. Steps led into tracks under the water. An awaiting boat. For a brief moment, time stood still.

According to local legend, at the south end of the lake, below the imposing Croda del Becco mountain, there is a gate to the Fanes Underworld, a gate that can only be reached by boat…
